Hobart Art Hotel Courtyard

The Art Hotel is the place in Hobart. Awesome breakfast, way too much food but very good. The courtyard shown here is where you can eat, and is protected from the freezing weather outside. The panorama was generated from a Flip video 360 degree pan using the Studio Artist 4 temporal scan tracker. This place is a great example of how to restore and repurpose an old building for modern use while still retaining the character that makes it unique and cool.

Lift Off

Up we go at sunrise in southern Australia. The panorama was generated by doing a 360 pan with a Flip video camera. This one works better by configuring the Studio Artist 4 scan tracker for a slit scan. The video footage was shot as the hot air balloon we were in ascended.

If you look closely at the image you can see the horrendous Flip avi frame indexing bug associated with Quicktime and the avi compression codec that Flip uses for the video files the camera generates. When you use the Quicktime apis to index the frames sequentially the actual video frames you get back are sometimes not correct for a given frame time. The bug seems to position itself along with the mpeg key frame indexes, so you see it every 20 frames. As you sequentially access the frames in Quicktime one will jump ahead too far, then the next one jumps back in time, then they advance forward in time again. It doesn't appear to happen when you play the video in real time, just when you try to access individual frames, which is what you need to do during video processing.

I can't believe it took me this long to notice this bug associated with the Flip camera on the mac. Most of what i do is either temporal processing where the frame order being slightly offset would not be noticeable since you are processing a big chunk of frames, or the scan tracker where it's going to be less noticeable. But looking back through my old slit scans you can see this problem, i always thought i was shaking the camera. When i started in on writing an image stabilization algorithm for Studio Artist to smooth out shaky video shots the real problem because apparent.

I ordered the Kodak Zi8 high def pocket video camera the day after i figured out this Flip bug was there. The extra resolution will be greatly appreciated. I started a dialog with Flip and Apple to try and resolve this problem, but i don't expect anything to happen quickly.

Jones Art Hotel

Video panorama taken in the courtyard of the Jones Art Hotel in Hobart Tasmania. This started with a 360 degree pan using a Flip video camera. That was then processed into a static panorama image using the Studio Artist 4 scantracker, which is one of the temporal image operations.

The Jones Art Hotel is an excellent example of taking an old industrial building and repurposing it for modern times. They also serve the best breakfast in Hobart.

Australia

The Melbourne film and media museum at federation square had a really interested exhibit that documented the making of the movie Australia. The work that went into creating the historical sets was pretty amazing. Made me want to see it in spite of the movie reviews. The history of Darwin in particular is fascinating. This is a painting of a photo taken from the movie promo.

Yarro Valley Balloon

This is a 360 degree Flip video slit scan generated using Studio Artist temporal ip ops taken in a hot air balloon over Yarra Valley outside of Melbourne Australia. We had to get up in the middle of the night so the balloon could take off at the crack of dawn.

Jones Art Hotel

A shot of the front of the Jones Art Hotel in the waterfront area of Hobart Tasmania. Panorama generated using the Studio Artist temporal scan tracker from a Flip video pan. I loved the old sandstone buildings in this area. This part of Hobart is a weird mix of this style of old waterfront buildings juxtaposed next to new San Francisco style urban loft constructions.
