space fill patterns
Continuation of the flat tone patterns experiment using space filling curves rather than the background texture region fill used in that post. The space filling curve pattern actually emulates something i saw in a real woodcut print from the 1800s (look at the first frame to see the base patterning).

Stylized Screening
Example of using a space filling curve to generate a stylized black and white halftone screening effect.

Indecision
Another gallery show stream grab. Using the same approach i documented in yesterday morning's post called Jack at the Bar. So the randomly selected MSG start cycle presets i'm using are a big part of the overall effect. Note the space filling curve embedded in the image that is generated by the MSG based start cycle part of the overall gallery show process used for generating this particular visual styling.

Post Office Butcher
Another variant on the space-filling curve MSG effects i've been playing around with. This one incorporates some multi-octave gradient lighting image processing to build up the raised relief of the water-washed MSG halftone output.

TSP Optimized Space Filling Curve 2
Another test of generating a space filling curve to use as a hatching pattern. The space filling curve is generated by a TSP path optimization algorithm.

TSP Optimized Space Filling Curve
Trying out some new ideas for a space filling curve for paint synth region fills, based on a TSP path optimization.

Hilbert Shading
I always wanted to do hatching patterns based on space filling curves. Still working through the details but it's getting there.

MSG Space Filling Curve Collage
Abstract image generated with some MSG processors that generate space filling curves. The process to get to this image involved working with Swamp evolution in the Studio Artist 4 Evolution Editor.
MSG is a modular image processing architecture. Swap evolution consists of generated mutated variants of MSG presets where individual processors are randomly mutated by swapping in different processors. It's all generated automatically at the touch of a button. The evolution is user directed, since the user picks the best mutation from a mutated set of preset variants, and then evolves a new generation based off of the selected mutation. So the user is always in the loop. Directed evolution is a great way to create all kinds of interesting effects and abstract imagery that would be difficult or impossible to create by manual hand editing.

Space Filling Curve Abstractions

I recently posted some cool MSG presets on the Studio Artist User Forum preset sharing group that show off some approaches to building halftoning effects out of space filling curves (like the Hilbert curve and other such mathematical variations for those of you technically inclined). One example shown above.
You need a copy of Studio Artist 4 to use these new abstraction presets. And by using the Evolution Editor you can build a hundred thousand unique variations if you are so inclined.

MSG Mountains 2

Another procedural art experiment in Studio Artist 4 using the MSG Evolution Editor. This one has some space filling curve stuff going on inside of it. The cool thing about working with directed evolution is that building an effect like this from scratch manually would be extremely tedious or more likely impossible.
