North Shore Calligraphy

Paul Perlow's recent Japanese calligraphy inspired posts on the Studio Artist user forum inspired me to take a shot at this particular stylization of north shore surfers.

Take the unexpected path

So i started this with a very specific paint effect in mind. One i painstakingly hand edited. I was working with the Current Preset Technique option in Gallery Show. Which of course works off of the current loaded reset file in the Browser, not whatever happens to be sitting in the Editor. So when i ran gallery show things immediately veered off into something that did not look at all like what i was trying to do.

But i decided to follow where Studio Artist had taken me. As opposed to cursing and fighting that. And i ended up in an interesting place because of that. One i would not have anticipated going to.

Personally i feel the contrast is too over-exposed in how this ended up. But it gave me a cool idea for a new second generic Composite option that could totally fix that over-exposure thing created by the combination of processing effects i was working with. Which i immediately added to our SA6 to do list.

Beach Exercise Ban

Governor essentially closed down all beaches in Hawaii except if you are traveling to get in the water or to get out of the water.  Here we see someone i know (i think, still waiting for confirmation on that) being greeted by the police as she pulls her kayak out of the water.

I'm still experimenting with a new Geodesic idea for generating paint effects in this image. Working from the skeleton core of the objects in the image and then expanding out. I figured out a cool iterative approach to generating the fill structure.

It would be amazing if we could provide a generic way to do it in Studio Artist as a single effect that runs 2 different ip op effects in multiple cycles to run the iterative algorithm. Yes please says the V6 feature list.

The other thing that needs to be integrated into this is an additional displacement mapping off of procedural noise to add micro-textures to the geodesic fill spread.  That and maybe try orientation modulated Chamfers (it's there in MSG to experiment with if you are curious).

Florida declares WWE essential business

At a press conference on Monday, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings walked reporters through Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s recent decision to categorize WWE as an “essential business,” a term most of us have come to associate with health-care workers, grocery store employees, and those working in public transportation.

Why quantum mechanics?

This kind of reminds me of the evil silicon valley CEO Nick Offerman in Devs, which is a great sci-fi series now showing on Fx / Hulu. As Devs creator Alex Garland says, "we're not detached from the underlying reality of our existence."  Boy that sure rings true in a different way these days.

The Real Heros

Studio Artist processed photo of the real heroes of the current crisis. My friend Vanessa working at a hospital in Marin. Looking like they are suited up to go to Mars. A thanks to all of the brave and dedicated medical professionals.

I fast edited a Dynamic Brush paint preset, then hit action let it do it's work. I used Smart Contrast to pull in the edging a little bit.

Hello Kitty

So i was messing with this custom 'raised look' oil paint preset. Desperately trying to make it look not at all like what you see here. So i finally gave up in disgust and moved on.

So then today i looked at it again, and kind of liked it's Japanese quality (for lack of a better way to put it). I then spent a lot of time mucking with a self modulated interactive warp in multiple steps to get it to this final place.

Now how can you apply this to your life. Here's an art strategy. Try to follow where Studio Artist is taking you. As opposed to trying to bend it to your will. You may end up in a totally unexpected place. And that's a good thing.

Super Hero

Just playing around with some new paint presets.  The Brush Load section of the Studio Artist paint synthesizer is way more powerful in V5, so you could spend years just messing around with all of the new implications hiding inside just that one control panel of the paint synthesizer.

In homage to the horror of Ben Affleck playing Batman in the next Batman movie, which we all await with a combination of fascination and utter dread.

Canvas Distortion

Playing around with a new Studio Artist paint preset. It's an edited modification of a preset that paints a lighting effect onto an image. The modification works great to distort the existing canvas like it's a splattering liquid paint. I started with a photo of a graffiti tag and quickly generated this abstract image by distortion painting over it.

Potrero Hill

One of my old stomping grounds in San Francisco. Also a homage to Wayne Thiebaud. Although it would be more of an homage if the painting of the hill was more stylized.
